Lil Sip: Turning Heartbreak into Hypnotic Trap Soul

Jasminn, better known by her stage name Lil Sip, is a rapper, singer, and songwriter whose music bridges the worlds of trap soul and hip hop. With lyrics that are both dark and uplifting, she invites listeners into a world where emotion drives creativity. Hailing from South Carolina, Lil Sip’s journey has not been easy. From foster care to prison, one thing has always remained a constant in her life: her love for poetry.

“I’ve always had a love for R&B music,” she explains. “Any R&B from the 1980s to 2000s. My top two influences are Luther Vandross and Luther Vandross. Poetry has always been my way of expressing myself, and heartbreak inspired the lyrics to my first song. From there, I just kept creating.”

Lil Sip’s approach to evolving as an artist is intentional. “Iron sharpens iron,” she says. She surrounds herself with people she can learn from, listens to podcasts, hits the gym, and explores creative environments. Trips and experiences help her maintain motivation, and she studies the legends, like Brandy and Michael Jackson, to improve her vocal layering and artistry.

Her latest release, Seven Sins, is a perfect example of her storytelling ability. “I wanted people to feel the song more than just listen to the lyrics. The song doesn’t describe the seven sins directly. Instead, I leave space for the audience to explore and understand them on their own. Even the ending is empty, giving room for reflection.”

While she hasn’t had major collaborations yet, Lil Sip’s dream feature would be with someone like Jill Scott, highlighting her admiration for soulful voices and poetic lyricism.

Starting her music career in 2018 with the release of Ride for Ya, Lil Sip has remained independent, focused on creating music that connects with her audience. Her first EP, Mixed Emotions, released in 2019, reached over 30,000 streams and was featured on Kreative HQ, helping to solidify her presence in the music industry.
